Recruiter spotlight: meet Michelle Muir!
CA Finance would like our clients and candidates to become familiarized with our consultants. Today, we are introducing recruiter Michelle Muir. To find out more about the woman you might be working with, check out the Q & A we did with Michelle Muir below!
Tell us a little about yourself?
My career within the recruitment industry began 12 years ago with my first job being responsible for recruiting students who wanted to work in the USA. Thereafter I moved into the medical space where I was responsible for recruiting nurses for the entire Free State province. During this period, I was promoted to team leader with two junior recruiters reporting to me. A new incentive was introduced whereby you could win a BMW Z4 to keep for a period of two weeks. This incentive was allocated to the individual who billed the most hour within their respective country for the given month. Out of the South African team as well as our large UK team (roughly 50 staff members, if not more), I was the second person to win.
Moving forward, I progressed into general recruitment which I practiced for several years before specializing in sectors. My very first specialization, beginning in 2010, was in the Technical space, referring to Engineering, Mining, Civil etc. I was also exposed to the African market at this stage as we were involved in numerous mining and civil projects in different African countries.
I joined CA Global Mid 2015 within their Finance team and could not be happier 😊
My current job title is Senior Recruiter / Executive Headhunter – Africa. I specialize in the placement of non-executive and executive board appointments, Chief Executive Officers, Chief Operating Officers, Managing Directors, Chief Financial Officers, Human Resources Directors and other specialized board level positions – such as Interim Board Members or Board Chairmen. I am also very involved in roles ranging from mid management and up. Industries I focus on is largely spread due to the knowledge I have gained over the years. I have clients in the following industries: all IT and technical related positions i.e. – Information Technology Services, E-commers, Aerospace and astronomy, Agriculture, Chemical, Software, Technology, Public utilities, government and NGO’s, Petroleum, Financial services, Information, Manufacturing, Automotive, Electronics, World Wide Web, Telecommunications and Internet.
Why choose to work at CA Global?
CA Global is an absolutely amazing company to work for. They provide the platform for consultants to grow within their specialized areas and build up your own team if that what you are working towards. The main factors setting CA Global apart from all other agencies I have previously worked for is their passion and drive to be the preferred supplier throughout Africa. The dedication and hard work that gets put into working alongside our clients is second to none. I have made amazing connections whilst working here and my network just keeps on growing. Management is always willing to jump in and assist, not to mention the numerous upskilling opportunities which have been provided, be it a short training course or an internationally recognized qualification.
I matriculated at Edgemead High in 2006, thereafter I began working immediately with the idea of having a gap year (which I’m still on). I’ve completed several training seminars and courses namely: SmartScreen Application and Biometric Integration through MIE Training Centre in Centurion, a course on Recruitment and Selection at the Belmont Square Conference Centre. I have also completed the APSO Entrance Exam (Field of Study Recruitment). In order to keep myself up to date with all the newest trends in the market, I continuously upskill myself though online learning initiatives.
Fun fact about yourself?
I love to DIY 😊 There is nothing more satisfying than being in my element with creativity flowing from all sides. Being a girl, I often get looks of disbelief from people when I mention anything related to my array of machine tools at home or anything alike.
Who is your role model and why?
I don’t have a specific role model however there are several people I admire and learn from. One example is my current MD. Merely 5 years ago he was in a position where I currently am. The fact that he has built up a large team of highly skilled senior consultants and signs retainer after retainer with the clients most could only dream of landing is the tip of the iceberg. His management style is another quality I admire and hope to acquire sometime in the near future.
Advice for clients/candidates?
Clients: When the time comes to relay and brief us on a role you urgently need filled, please remember, we do not work in your office and research can only account for that much. Certain aspects such as company culture, which are all too important nowadays, need to be conveyed. If you want a super star from a certain firm, tell us and we will get you just that. Communication is key.
Another very important message I would like to bring across is that when an organization looks at agencies to approach, I cannot stress enough how important it is to do your homework. Yes, there are some truly amazing agencies out there, but there are all too many start up agencies promising the world but delivering a few crumbs. This is usually when the bad perspective and negative outlook starts to manifest. Know what skill you need, what agency will best suit your requirements and get references if you must.
Candidates: Honesty is the best policy! Be open and as transparent as you can with your agent. If you can’t or won’t accept a role that requires you to work till 5 pm, tell us and please explain the reason why. This will help us understand your dynamics and provide better insight in securing you the role which will leave a lasting ear to ear smile on your face.
Which country within Africa do you think will be the next hot spot and why?
Ghana – In January, Ghana’s benchmark stock index achieved the world’s highest rate of growth.
What is your outlook within your industry over the next 5 years?
With the digital age accelerating at an alarming rate, agencies need to ensure they are keeping up to date with the times. With clever combination of human expertise with technology and smart thinking, it’s important to create niche markets that will ultimately benefit both client, candidate and agency.
CA Global is a big believer in Africa, why do YOU believe in Africa?
Simple. Because Africans believe in themselves.
